“We have seen other shows but this performance was educational and we found out where the public can get information from…” said a Lady Health Worker in district Kasur. She was referring to a puppet show on ‘Right to Information’, organized by Center.
Center is supporting GIZ through development and implementation of a campaign to create knowledge about the rights and responsibilities of active citizenship. The campaign includes a range entertainment-education, outreach and social mobilisation activities as well as civic education measures. The Support to Local Governance (LoGo) Programme is implemented by German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) to improve service delivery by local government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab provinces.
In the first phase of the campaign, Center is concept testing different formats of narrative building for their reception and effectiveness. Accordingly, six storytelling sessions in KP, and three puppet shows and two theatre performances in Punjab were held.
Designed as an entertainment-education approach, the campaign started early in February 2019, in areas of Haripur, Khanpur and Ghazi. Performances were held with the aim to increase knowledge of citizens’ right to information and need for active civic engagement. Representatives from women organizations, students, members from trade unions and bar associations, councillors and the general public attended these performances in large numbers.
In Punjab, the theatre performance was held to highlight the importance of Local Council Association during the orientation for the newly constituted Board of Governors of the Local Council Association in Lahore. Local government delegates attended the event from all 36 districts of Punjab.
This performance was followed by a puppet show on citizens’ Right to Information, held at the Lady Health Workers orientation session in Kasur, which was attended by more than 200 Lady Health Workers and health staff. Two more puppet shows were held during the workshops on local government organized for representatives from the Union Councils (UC), UC Chairmen, UC Vice Chairmen, UC Secretaries and representatives of the local government departments.
Overall, the entertainment education interventions were well received and the testimonials of the audiences were recorded for feedback and comments.
