Center congratulates winners of the 2017 Excellence Award in Journalism – Lab Azad!

“Participants”

Center for Excellence in Journalism at the Institute of Business Administration (CEJ-IBA) Karachi and Center for Communication Programs Pakistan (Center) jointly organized the annual Excellence in Journalism Award – Lab Azad – for year 2017. Lab Azad is an independent award given every year to print and broadcast journalists who exhibit distinction in reporting on social issues. Every year specific issues are selected under which key nominations are invited from journalists nationwide.

Under the overall theme of rights-based reporting, this year the award focused on following sub-themes:
1. Population Growth and Realisation of Human Rights
2. Health Rights, with focus on access to services
3. Women Rights, with focus on reproductive health and family planning

The aim of these Awards is to give recognition to specialized reporting in Pakistan and to institutionalize rights-based approach to journalism.

An independent jury of senior most journalists comprising highly respected names evaluates shortlisted stories against an established criterion for finalizing winners. The judges’ panel included Rahimullah Yousufzai, Resident Editor of The News Peshawar, Farah Zia, Editor of The News on Sunday, Tariq Mehmood, Director News, News-One and Ms. Afiya Zia, Contributor to Dawn-Scholar.

The year’s award ceremony was held on December 20, 2017 at CEJ IBA city campus Karachi, which was attended by a large number of journalists and news media personalities. A total of twelve journalists received the awards on rights based reporting for news stories published between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017 on the following categories: Mainstream broadcast (TV/Radio); Mainstream print/online-English; Mainstream print/online-Urdu; District Correspondence.

The winners in each of the four categories are as follows:

Mainstream broadcast (TV/Radio):
• Ms. Amina Shaheen from Geo TV for Health rights with focus on access to services
• Mr. Shayan Saleem from Samaa TV for Population growth and realisation of human rights
• Ms. Shumaila Jaffery from BBC for Women rights with focus on reproductive health and family planning

Mainstream print/online- English:
• MR. Yousaf Ajab Baloch from Balochistan Point for Health rights with focus on access to services
• Mr. Bilal Karim Mughal from Dawn.Com for Population growth and realisation of human rights
• Ms. Atika Rehman from Dawn.Com for Women rights with focus on reproductive health and family planning

Mainstream print/online – Urdu:
• Mr. Muhammad Atif Sheikh, a freelance journalist, for Health rights with focus on access to services
• Mr. Syed Sajjad Kazmi from Daily Dunya for Population growth and realisation of human rights
• Ms. Fariha Fatima from ARY News for Women rights with focus on reproductive health and family planning

District Correspondents:
• Mr. Nisar Ahmad Khan from Dawn News for Health rights with focus on access to services
• Mr. Islam Gul Afridi from Daily Akhbar E Khyber for Population growth and realisation of human rights
• Mr. Amjad Ali from Daily Islah for Women rights with focus on reproductive health and family planning

Speaking at the occasion, former Federal Information Minister Javed Jabbar spoke at length on the changing role of news with the advent of social media. Earlier, CEJ-IBA Director Kamal Siddiqi had briefed guests about the background of the award and its contribution to institutionalization of health reporting. Senior journalist Rahimullah Yousufzai applauded CEJ and Center in its efforts to promote specialized reporting in Pakistan. The Ceremony ended with distribution of certificates and awards among the winners.
